Character Backstory
Hello and welcome back to my blog.
Today I will talk about character backstory. What is it in the character’s history that makes them do what they do today in the present day situation of the narrative of your story.
A few questions to ask:
- Is your character a man who has had every woman he’s ever dated ghosted him? Simply broke off contact with him, not responding to any emails, texts or phone calls? If you’ve ever had that happen to you with one person ghosting you, imagine how it would feel if everyone you’ve ever date did that to you. This could be the basis for a character who is done with women from a dating standpoint and wants nothing more to do with them. How would this affect him in the story when he has to deal with women at work or as he travels through his day to day life. Perhaps this could fit into some kind of romance story or any story at all where the character he has to trust is a woman. Maybe one of the women who ghosted him.
- If the character is a woman who in her past was raped, she’s probably going to have trust issues in dealing with men. If a male coworker mover to hug her at the office Christmas party, will she pull away or accept the hug but be shaking on the inside wondering what the man is going to do.
- The character could be overcome by guilt from having been responsible for another person’s death. Thinks about how this would affect how he or she acts in the story
- Another idea is that the character has had people who were close to him in his past die tragically. Even though not responsible for their deaths he might think that he was and closes himself off to other people. He wants to keep those people safe by not being around him.
Anyway, I hope those tips help. Have a great day.
Great thought! How do you find the most important backstory to your own life Ian?
Try and take what lessons can be learned and apply it to the present day.
