A Cowardly Firefighter
Warren put his guitar back on its stand, he hated having to
go back to his job as a firefighter. That job became a source of more and more
resentment as the years went by, especially after the band he was kicked out of
got their record deal and went on to become Grammy Award winners with platinum
selling albums and eventually getting their Weird Al Yankovic parody. That’s
when the band truly arrived.
And now Warren as a firefighter hoped that one day his former friends would
need him to rescue them. He thought about what he would do should that day ever
come. Would he do his job at and rescue them or what he let them die? They
ruined his life so maybe he should get a little payback and ruin theirs. Ever
since the day he was kicked out of the band he felt This Means War, but if he
let one of them die it could mean prison for him.
That is assuming anyone found out that he didn’t do anything to save their
life. So far in his career he’s been able to hide his cowardice from his
coworkers and superiors. Like the time he faked a sprained ankle when he had to
run in to a house luckily no one was killed in that fire and he’s been quite
fortunate so far that his cowardly actions haven’t resulted in any serious
injuries or deaths. So far, he’s been lucky as has anyone who he would have had
to rescue, not to mention the men and women who’s back he is supposed to have.
2 hours after finishing playing his guitar, he arrived at the firehouse appearing
ready to work. And inevitably a call came in, a major fire at a duplex 5
minutes from the station. Like all the firefighters warren got suited up and
hopped on the truck and away they went to the fire.
Upon arrival Warren and the other firefighters started unraveling hoses from
the truck, and when others started to go towards the house Warren announced
that he would hook up a hose to the closest fire hydrant and away he went.
Once that task was completed he made his way to the fire as slowly as he could
without it being obvious that he was scared. And he got within 20 feet when
they heard two of their firefighters calling for help. And now he could no
longer find an excuse not to go in.
Warren and three others went in the front door and followed the voices of their
fellow firefighters to where they were both trapped with a beam laying across
their legs. He asked the others if he should go out and get something to raise
the beam off them, and he was told just use an axe.
Two of the firefighters pried the beam up enough for Warren and the other man
to drag the two injured firefighters far enough from the beam that it could be
set down, and the other firefighters helped carry the injured men out of the
house. After they are put on stretchers and in the backs of ambulances, Warren
breathed a sigh of relief, today he came through when someone needed him.
