How Fiction Mirrors Real Life
Hello and welcome back to my blog
Today I am going to talk about how fiction often mirrors real life. It is inspired by an article here.
The article is about Pranav Kasture’s debut novel Wait . . . Until She Proposes and how while the book is a work of fiction there are aspects that reflect some of his observations.
For me this is true that writing fictional characters can be based on real life people. You take the movies Psycho and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Both the characters of Norman Bates and Leather Face were based on real life serial killer Ed Gein.
So you can base characters and events on real people and events, make sure though to change them enough so the people you base them on don’t recognize themselves and sue you.
One way to do this is as you go through your day observe how people are acting and talking. Some people are always looking down at the ground and walking slowly. Think about why this person is doing that on this day. Ask these questions:
- did this person lose their job?
- did they have a fight with their significant other?
- or are they simply a shy and introverted person?
That’s a start. You can surely come up with more. Make it a great day.
