How To Come Up With An Exciting Story
Hello and welcome back to my blog.
I thought today should be about coming up with an exciting story – or an original one.
First thing to keep in mind the story you write has to be about something that excites you as an author. If you don’t enjoy the story you’re writing how can you expect the audience to? So that’s the first thing about your story to check off. Is this a story you would enjoy reading, and are you having fun while writing it. Remember in writing books, at least fiction books, you are making fun. So if you can’t have fun while making fun, perhaps take on a different story.
Or perhaps you might just need a break and come back with a fresh look.
As far as an original story goes, I remember reading somewhere that the last original plot was a few thousand years ago. So the key is to come up with an original story. Plot is the events that happen and story is about a person who has a flaw of some sort and either overcomes the flaw or is destroyed by it.
Take this plot for example, two police detectives try to shut down an organized crime syndicate (or insert any other type of criminals). This is every cop buddy story out there. Here’s the story for the movie Lethal Weapon – a police detective on the verge of retirement, Roger Murtaugh, is forced to take on a partner, Martin Riggs, who is on the verge of committing suicide. There you can see the potential for conflict which every good story needs.
Most romance stories are boy meets girl, boy loses girl, and boy gets girl back sweeping her off her feet and carrying her away to their happy ever after. Now try to come up with something better.
For my revenge story, No Remorse No Regret, I wanted something different than the typical one with a former special forces or covert spy operative who’s wife and/or daughter gets kidnapped and/or murdered, then he goes psycho and all on his own he mows down all the bad guys.
My story is a little bit different than that, follows the theory of give us the same but different.
So watch your favorite TV shows and movies and read the books. Then list what you found enjoyable about them and then come up with your own list to put different twists in your story.
Have a great day.
