Writing Funny Scenes
Hello an welcome back.
Probably one of the hardest parts of writing is to come up with something funny in a scene. After all we don’t all share the same sense of humor. That’s not to say you shouldn’t use your own style of humor in your book, it is after all yours. But think about the times when a joke fell flat and nobody laughed.
So here’s three tips on how to incorporate some funny scenes or elements in your writing.
Tip 1: Pay attention to what goes on around you and what people laugh at. Try and think of ways to incorporate that into your writing. For example, in addition to writing I also enjoy playing drums. No word of a lie, it was actually my mother who encouraged me to take up drumming. So a joke would be, I’m probably the only drummer on the planet who’s mom wanted me to play drums.
So how to incorporate that into a story? What are other things that you would think a mother would hate for her children to do or be involved in? How about this – Hey son, go out and roll around in the mud. You’re the one who’s going to be washing your clothes. And by washing them I mean by hand, you won’t be using the machine.
That’s a start.
Tip 2: Know your characters. By this I mean, have a back story for your characters and when they would say something that might be humorous, and how they would say it. In my novel No Remorse No Regret, I have the female detective Jackie Cruze similar in style to the character of Lennie Briscoe on Law And Order.
Tip 3: Continually practice. No better advice can be given. With experience and practice, you will get better at writing humor.
I hope this helps. Have a great day.
